4 Tips to Get Rid of Oily Stains on Carpet

oily-carpet-stainWhen you get an oil stain on your carpet, your first thought is often to simply push a big piece of furniture over the stain to hide it. This may be a great short term solution, but it does not fix the long-term problem. There is no need to avoid or hide these messes because there are many ways to get these difficult stains out of your carpet. Simply follow JAN-PRO’s cleaning tips below for some ideas on how to handle these messy situations:

Tip 1: Small Oil Stains

For small oil stains you will want to take a small amount of rubbing alcohol and place it on paper towel or a dry rag. Apply to the oil stain and blot until most of the stain is gone. You will then add some dry-cleaning solvent to a clean towel and blot the stain. Repeat this process until the stain is completely removed.

Tip 2: Large Oil Stains

For larger oil stains you will want to purchase a high-quality dry-cleaning solvent. Simply take a dry towel and moisten it with the solvent. Blot around and into the stained area. Repeat this several times until the stain is removed. If after a few days of using the solvent the stain is still present, you may need to contact a professional cleaning company.

Tip 3: Stubborn Oil Stains

For really difficult, or fresh stains, start by scraping the excess oil off the carpet with a spoon and dispose in your trash can. Next, pour a thick layer of baking soda (or another kind of absorbent) over the stain and let it soak up the oil for about 6-7 hours before vacuuming the contents off of the carpet. Now take a dry cloth and soak it in club soda, and blot the area in and around the stain. Lastly, you need to apply some dry-cleaning solvent to the stain with a clean towel and repeat this process until the stain disappears.

Tip 4: Call in an Expert

If you do not feel comfortable removing the stain yourself or you just do not have the time, simply call a professional cleaning service in your area. Companies like JAN-PRO are trained professionals and can ensure that the stain is cleaned thoroughly without ruining your carpet.
