The World Health Organization (WHO) pandemic threat level remains unchanged at Phase Five.  As of June 3, 2009 there were 969 lab-confirmed cases of novel H1N1 Influenza A virus (swine flu) in Ontario. Of these cases, 54 had a travel history to Mexico. Of the remaining 915 cases, 525 acquired the H1N1 flu virus in Ontario, 11 had a travel history to another affected region and 379 cases continue to be investigated. Nearly all H1N1 cases in Ontario are considered mild.  There have been few hospitalized cases, most of whom have recovered and have been discharged. 

The significant amount of laboratory testing conducted to date has shown that the 2009 novel H1N1 influenza A virus is the predominant circulating strain of influenza in many communities at this time.  In addition, surveillance and clinical data have shown that the majority of confirmed cases have experienced mild symptoms. 

A detailed listing of the newly confirmed H1N1 Influenza (swine flu) cases in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is outlined below.

As of May 6, there are a total of 214 cases of the H1N1 Influenza virus (Swine Flu) in Canada.  There are 7 in Durham, 1 in Ottawa, 2 in Halton, 1 in Middlesex-London, 1 in Oxford County, 6 in Peel, 2 in Simcoe, 2 in Sudbury, 12 in Toronto, 5 in Windsor-Essex, 9 in York, and another 1 from an Unknown source.

Qu’est-ce que la grippe porcine : La grippe porcine est une maladie respiratoire d’origine virale qui touche le porc. Des épizooties sont régulièrement observées, sans provoquer généralement beaucoup de décès chez les porcs.

Symptômes : Il est facile de distinguer les symptômes de la grippe de ceux d’un simple rhume. La grippe se distingue par sa puissance symptomatique. Les symptômes de la grippe sont extrêmement plus puissants, ils vous terrassent et se caractérisent par de forts accès de fièvre, des douleurs musculaires intenses et un épuisement profond. La plupart d’entre nous n’auront qu’une à deux grippes dans leur vie, alors que nous pouvons avoir de 2 à 3 rhumes par année sans trop en souffrir.

Personnes à risques : Les personnes les plus à risques sont les personnes en bonne santé et appartenant au groupe d’âge de 25 à 45 ans.

Transmission : Le virus se propage vraisemblablement de la même façon que celui de la grippe saisonnière traditionnelle, via la toux et les éternuements de personnes infectées.

Vaccination : Il n’existe présentement aucun vaccin efficace contre la grippe porcine. Ces vaccins seront disponibles dans 4 à 6 mois. Par contre, l’utilisation de Tamiflu ou du Relenza représente un traitement efficace contre la grippe porcine. Dans tous les cas, consultez d’abord un professionnel de la santé.

Prévention :  

• Lavez-vous les mains le plus souvent possible avec du savon à mains non antimicrobien.

• Ne cherchez pas à remplacer le simple lavage des mains par des gels alcooliques.
• Évitez de porter des objets à votre bouche.
• Portez un masque si vous êtes contagieux ou si vous avez l’obligation d’assister des personnes infectées.
• Éternuez et toussez dans l’ouverture de votre avant-bras et non pas dans vos mains.
• Évitez le contact avec les personnes malades.
• En cas d’infection, évitez les endroits de grande affluence (transport en commun, cinéma, etc.).
• Ne relâchez pas les bonnes procédures courantes de nettoyage et ne cherchez surtout pas à les remplacer par des opérations de désinfection.

As of Tuesday April 28, 2009 there were a total of 13 confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Canada.  This number has increased to 19 in a few short hours, with 7 cases being in Ontario.  There were also 91 confirmed cases in the United States and 160 deaths world-wide.  The CDC (Centre for Disease Control) made an announcement in which they stated that “… a pattern of more severe illness associated with this virus may be emerging in the U.S.” and that “Most people will not have immunity to this new virus and, as it continues to spread, more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths are expected in the coming days and weeks.”

On Wednesday April 29, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a level 5, the second highest in their scale warning that a pandemic may be imminent.  Though they have increased their efforts to find a vaccine for this virus, it may take up to 6 months to have one readily available.

How does swine flu spread?
Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.  That is where the Jan-Pro difference comes in to play.  Our powerful disinfectants will properly clean all the high touch items in your office.  Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick!

What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination?
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

Take everyday actions to stay healthy:

·         Stay informed!

·         Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

·         Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

·         Get proper sleep, be physically active, and manage your stress.

·         Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

·         Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.

·         Develop a family emergency plan as a precaution. This should include storing a supply of food, medicines, facemasks, alcohol-based hand rubs and other essential supplies.

What is the best technique for washing my hands to avoid getting the flu?
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water. or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner. we recommend that when you wash your hands — with soap and warm water — that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn’t need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

-          Stay home when you are sick and check with a health care provider when needed

-          Practice other good health habits

·        Post notices on proper hand-washing techniques in restrooms, and provide hand-sanitizing gels for each employee

·        If your office is not cleaned by Jan-Pro every day that you are open for business, you should provide latex gloves, disinfectant wipes, and disinfecting solutions and paper towels for your employees to use daily.  These items should be readily available and used in restrooms, kitchens, and on all areas touched frequently by hands.  This will ensure that maximum disinfecting is provided for your facility between commercial cleaning visits.
